Body describes how light or full a wine feels. Tannins create the drying sensation found in many reds, while acidity gives freshness. With whites, Sauvignon Blanc is a useful starting point for fresh, aromatic styles; Chardonnay offers a range from lean and lively to rounder, oak-influenced bottles.

For a dinner party, consider whether one versatile style will suit the menu or whether a red and a white would give guests more choice.
