The Cousiño-Macul Lota is made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes hand-selected and hand-picked in Maipo Valley, Chile. They’re aged in new oak barrels for 15 months, and has an ABV of 14.2%.
Counted in the top one percent of wines in the world, this full-bodied and elegant wine has a deep red color. It has complex aromas, with notes of dark fruits, and hints of cedar and spice. On the palate, you get flavors of blackberry and blackcurrant, with notes of cocoa, soft oak, and warm spices.
This Chilean red blend will go great with Gorgonzola cheese for starters. Pair it with some Wagyu steak or grilled lamb for your main, or a mushroom risotto or eggplant lasagna.
The only 19th century Chilean winery that is still owned and headed by the same family, Cousiño Macul is on its sixth and seventh generation, with over 160 years under its belt. It was Matias Cousiño that began the story, buying 1000 hectares of land at the foot of the Andes Mountains in 1856. His son, Luis, inherited the land after Matias’ death, and dreamt of starting a family-run vineyard. He and his wife, Isadora, worked on the quality and variety of the vines, even traveling to Europe to bring back varieties to Chile.
And when Luis passed, Isadora took up the mantle. She was one of South America’s first female entrepreneurs, and maintained the Cousiño tradition, while using innovations and technologies to improve. Today, the Cousiño Macul Winery honors what their ancestors began: creating world-class wines that carry a distinct Chilean characteristic.
Store unopened red wines in a cool, dry, and dark place safe from constant vibration. Keep your bottle horizontal in a wine rack or cellar to retain the moistness of the cork. The ideal temperature for storage is between 16 to 18°C. Once opened, a bottle will be good for 3 to 5 days standing upright in the refrigerator.
