TASTING NOTES FROM THE CURATOR

The Joseph Drouhin – Puligny Montrachet is an elegant wine, made with Chardonnay grapes. This Biodynamic Burgundy white is counted in the top one percent of wines in the world. It has an ABV of 13%, and a bright color with white gold hues.

A buttery, complex white wine, it exudes aromas of in-bloom trees, and white flesh fruit (think white peaches). On the palate, it has a wonderful silkiness, with exceptional floral, fruity flavors.

PREPARATION AND PAIRINGS

This Puligny Montrachet is wonderfully complex, and is great to pair with mild and soft cheeses, and cured meats as starters. To enjoy with entrees, try it with shellfish, salmon or tuna dishes, or tomato or pesto-based pastas.

A YOUNG MAN OF GREAT AMBITION

At the age of 22, in 1880, Joseph Drouhin settled in Beaune to found his own wine company. This young man from Chablis was brave, daring, with a good head for business, and he aimed to make great quality wines that bore his name.

It was when his son, Maurice, took over, that the House established a vineyard domaine, acquiring high quality appellations like Clos des Mouches and Clos de Vougeot. And when Maurice’s son, Robert, succeeded him in 1857, they introduced “culture raisonée,” which was to do away with pesticides and other chemicals. He was one of the first in Burgundy to do so, and he also built a laboratory dedicated to enology, and run by the first woman enologist in Burgundy, Laurence Jobard.

House Drouhin is presently run by Joseph’s great grandchildren, upholding all the values with which their ancestor built his business—a constant search for quality, and a deep appreciation for the natural elegance of Burgundy.
