The 2021 Masseto brings opulence and precision together in a deeply layered Merlot expression. Dark and red fruits unfold with crushed flowers, fine spice, blood orange, and a distinctly saline mineral character. The palate is broad and concentrated, yet its texture is polished, with ripe tannins shaping the fruit into a seamless, flowing line. Floral lift and citrus energy keep the wine from feeling heavy, while spice and mineral depth provide complexity beneath the generous fruit. With air, the wine behaves like a liquid kaleidoscope, its aromas and flavours shifting from one pour to the next. Its richness is immediate, but the wine's deeper achievement is balance: opulence is held in check by freshness, savoury tension, and finely integrated structure. A generous decant will reveal more detail now, while the wine's concentration and poise make it a compelling prospect for extended cellaring. Its saline finish becomes increasingly distinctive with air.

Serve around 16–18°C and decant generously while young. Beef tenderloin, roast lamb, duck breast, venison, or braised short ribs will match its plush fruit and polished tannins. Porcini, truffle, black lentils, celeriac, aubergine, rosemary, and roasted shallots can echo the wine's earth, spice, and mineral depth. Keep reductions savoury and controlled, avoiding sweetness, fierce chilli, or excessive smoke. Mature Pecorino, Comté, Gouda, or Cheddar will work well after the main course. A large Bordeaux glass and an unhurried service allow its flowers, blood orange, fruit, spice, and saline detail to separate and recombine gracefully as the wine opens over time.

Masseto takes its name from the dense blue clay known locally as massi, the defining material beneath its Bolgheri vineyard. Merlot responds to this soil with concentration, depth, and a distinctive mineral character. The 2021 season began with a mild, rainy winter that replenished reserves in the calcareous-clayey ground, followed by a dry summer that produced small, concentrated grapes. Careful parcel selection and élevage transformed that fruit into a wine of both scale and polish. Masseto's identity rests on this tension: a powerful Mediterranean Merlot shaped by clay and warmth, yet refined through freshness, floral detail, and a long saline line.
