The 2020 Harlan Estate brings together dark fruit and hillside structure in a restrained, polished form. Blackcurrant, black cherry, and plum lead the bouquet, with violet, cedar, tobacco, graphite, and dark chocolate emerging as the wine opens. Its fruit is ripe and concentrated, yet the palate retains a firm mineral line and a sense of proportion. Fine-grained tannins give definition without coarseness, carrying cassis and plum through savoury oak, floral lift, and stony detail. The finish is long and composed, with graphite and dark chocolate lingering beneath the fruit. This is not a soft or immediately simple vintage; it rewards time in the glass and careful cellaring. Hints of violet and cedar become especially clear after prolonged exposure to air, adding fragrance to the firm core. The wine's most persuasive quality is the way its power is channelled: the dark-fruited core remains dense, but freshness, polished tannin, and mineral persistence prevent heaviness and preserve Harlan's characteristic hillside poise.
Serve at approximately 16–18°C and decant well in advance. Beef tenderloin, roast lamb, venison, duck, or braised beef with a clean, savoury jus will suit its concentration and refined tannins. Porcini, truffle, lentils, roasted shallots, celeriac, and thyme can draw out its cedar, tobacco, and mineral dimensions. Avoid sugary reductions, heavily smoked preparations, and fierce spice, which can obscure its floral and graphite detail. Mature Comté, Gouda, or Cheddar makes a confident final course. A large Bordeaux glass and an unhurried meal give the wine time to move from dense black fruit toward violets, cedar, chocolate, and a more articulate mineral finish.
Founded in 1984, Harlan Estate occupies the western hills of Oakville in Napa Valley. The property covers roughly 240 acres, with about 40 acres planted to vines across elevations ranging from approximately 225 to 1,225 feet. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the heart of the vineyard, joined by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Volcanic and sedimentary bedrock, steep exposures, and a patchwork of soils allow the estate to build complexity through many small parcels. The result is a singular Napa expression whose reputation rests not only on concentration, but also on the disciplined farming, selection, and blending required to translate a rugged hillside into a seamless, cellar-worthy wine.
Store unopened on its side in a cool, dark, temperature-stable cellar. Avoid heat, direct light, vibration, and rapid temperature changes. Serve around 16–18°C and decant generously while young. Contains sulphites.
