Château Margaux 2021 is built around 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot. The estate deliberately avoided aggressive tannin extraction in a challenging growing season, choosing gentler work in the cellar to protect delicacy. Early tastings of the selected parcels nevertheless revealed surprising density, with polyphenol levels close to those seen in warmer years. Cabernet Sauvignon forms the wine’s heart, giving the blend its line and persistence; Merlot adds a measured softness, Cabernet Franc contributes elegant structure, and Petit Verdot completes the composition. The profile is concentrated without heaviness, presenting a poised tension between depth and finesse. Its tannins are shaped for precision rather than force, and the wine carries the cool poise of the vintage alongside the density achieved through rigorous selection. Only 36% of the harvest became the Grand Vin. That selectivity can be felt in the wine’s coherence: it moves with quiet authority, gathering structure and length while remaining unmistakably Margaux in its elegance, balance, and controlled expression.
Serve around 16–18°C and give a young bottle ample time in a decanter. The wine’s Cabernet-led structure and refined tannins pair beautifully with roast beef, lamb saddle, duck, veal, or simply grilled steak accompanied by a restrained jus. Keep flavours precise: mushrooms, celeriac, black lentils, roasted shallots, and herbs complement the wine without obscuring its elegance. A classic beef tenderloin or herb-crusted lamb allows its density and freshness to remain the focus. For cheese, choose Comté, Gruyère, or aged Gouda rather than very pungent styles. Avoid sticky-sweet reductions and high chilli heat. Use large Bordeaux glasses and follow the wine over time; its measured extraction and select structure reward slow service, revealing more detail as the tannins settle and the blend opens.
The estate faced a difficult decision in September 2021: harvest before full ripeness to reduce the risk of Botrytis, or wait for greater maturity and concentration. Château Margaux chose patience. Early Merlot parcels were picked from 24 September, while the later Cabernet harvest began only on 4 October and concluded on 13 October. This followed a wet winter, spring frost, rainy early summer, a dry August and first half of September, and then renewed rain. The team’s attention kept the red grapes healthy, while strict selection and gentle extraction converted a demanding season into an elegant and dense wine. Château Margaux 2021 therefore tells a story of restraint: waiting in the vineyard, avoiding forced extraction in the cellar, and allowing the finest parcels to define the Grand Vin.
Store unopened in a cool, dark place with a stable cellar temperature, ideally on its side. Protect the bottle from heat, sunlight, vibration, and rapid temperature changes. Serve at approximately 16–18°C and decant before serving while young. Contains sulphites.
