The 2021 blend is 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Cabernet Franc, 11% Merlot, and 9% Petit Verdot. Black cherry and wild berries form the fruit core, lifted by floral notes and the savoury mountain character of chamise, sage, and bay. Cabernet Sauvignon supplies depth and structure, while the unusually prominent Cabernet Franc brings aromatic energy and a fresh, finely drawn line. Merlot softens the centre, and Petit Verdot contributes colour, spice, and persistence. Refined concentration, measured intensity, and vibrancy keep the palate complex and nuanced rather than simply massive. Firm but integrated tannins carry dark fruit, herbs, mineral detail, and a sense of volcanic tension into a long finish. The overall impression is one of mountain-grown authority with carefully controlled weight—power that remains articulate, fresh, and composed.
As it opens, mountain herbs and floral notes temper the dark fruit, giving every sip a sense of altitude, energy, and direction.
Its finish stays bright and precise.
Serve around 16–18°C and decant for several hours while young. The wine's mountain structure and savoury herbs pair naturally with roast lamb, beef rib, venison, duck, or braised beef. Rosemary, sage, bay, mushrooms, lentils, aubergine, and roasted root vegetables can echo its aromatic landscape. Keep sauces savoury and restrained, avoiding excessive sweetness or chilli. Mature Cheddar, Comté, or aged Gouda can follow. Use large glasses and allow the wine to evolve slowly; its black fruit, floral detail, wild herbs, and volcanic tension become more distinct with air.
For a quieter pairing, try grilled portobello mushrooms with rosemary, or aged Comté served after dinner as the wine continues to open.
Continuum was founded by Tim Mondavi and family with a focus on one estate-grown wine. Sage Mountain Vineyard sits high above the Napa Valley on volcanic terrain, where exposure, elevation, and lean soils shape small, concentrated berries. The estate's mature vine material includes plantings from 1991 and 1996 alongside later blocks from 2004 and 2010. The 2021 season was marked by drought and only 12.6 inches of rain, producing a low average yield of 2.4 tons per acre. Careful farming and selection turned those conditions into a wine of vibrancy and precise intensity.
That elevation gives Continuum both its dramatic setting and the freshness that distinguishes its mountain-grown character.
Store unopened on its side in a cool, dark, temperature-stable cellar. Avoid heat, sunlight, vibration, and rapid temperature changes. Serve around 16–18°C and decant generously while young. Contains sulphites.
