Quevedo’s tawny ports are allowed to slowly oxidize in oak casks, allowed to take on that signature golden tone and nutty flavoring. This ten-year version is a pale sort of tawny, with an intense aroma of dried fruits mixed with walnut and toffee. The nuttiness is balanced by sweetness, reminiscent of demerara sugar, bitter chocolate, and spiced caramel all at once, with a hint of fig and citrus in the finish. Bright and fresh with delightfully treacly notes at the end, you’ll hardly notice the high alcohol hit!
Tawny ports go well with anything on the nutty dessert spectrum, from caramel cheesecakes and pecan pies to German chocolate cake, crème brûlée, and coconut cream pie. Even a scoop of vanilla or coffee ice cream benefits from this port’s walnut-toffee infusion. Desserts are not the only foods that go well with tawny port. Pour yourself a glass to go with a lovely cheese board of Manchego, white cheddar, Stilton, and any hard sheep cheese—finished off with dried cherries and apricots, of course!
The Quevedos are a family with a long history of growing grapes and making port wine, all the way back from 1889. Oscar and Beatriz Quevedo built their winery in the 1990s and turned the family passion into a fruitful business. They believe that wine is made in the vineyard. Without good grapes, the processes in a winery do not matter. That is why they now cultivate 114 hectares of terraced vineyards across six properties in the Douro Valley. This diversity provides grapes of varying aromas and flavors to help them craft unique wines that get better and better with every sip.
