It unleashes a well-spring of classic Japanese notes, including chestnuts and toasted sesame in your palette, with the 'popcorn' brown rice popping over your tongue. The popping brown rice was once used as a filler for the poor man's tea. But in Gryphon Genmaicha, it is used to add a premium twist and nutty undertones to the regular tea experience.

The tea’s light yellow hue is a treat for the eyes, accompanied by the enchanting aroma of the roasted rice. Gryphon Genmaicha delivers a smooth mix of fresh nutty and grassy notes with the roasted rice flavor tampering its bitterness.

Preparation

Gryphon Genmaicha combines roasted rice or genmai with green tea in optimal proportions. To get it right in your first try, brew it in hot water at about 80–85 °C for 3-4 minutes, depending on how loose you want the flavor to be. You can also combine this rich tea with other drinks of your choosing like hojicha and matcha.

An Accidental Discovery

Genmaicha’s origin is still disputed, but one of the most popular narratives is that a man in Kyoto once wanted to dispose of his undesirable Kagami mochi (a mochi rice cake used for Japanese New Year celebrations), but didn’t want it to go to waste, so he saved some pieces and drank them with green tea. The tea has always been popular thanks to its health benefits, which include quick nourishment during fasts, anti-oxidation, detoxification, normalization of blood pressure, and cancer prevention.
