TASTING NOTES FROM THE CURATOR
Spice, a hint of corn, a little fruit—that’s what gives Maryland whiskeys their bold reputation. We’ve selected Sagamore’s bestsellers, all scoring 95 points from beverage industry heavy hitter The Tasting Panel.
- Signature Rye Whiskey – Straw gold in color, with notes of candied orange peel, nutmeg, and clove, this whiskey is Sagamore’s classic blend. Hints of walnut and brown sugar linger on the tongue while hints of caramel, vanilla, and baking spices tickle the nose. It holds a Platinum Label from the 2016 Sip Awards.
- Double Oak Rye Whiskey – Sagamore’s classic, finished twice as long in the barrel, has the richness of caramel, toasted coconut, and a blend of nutty-vanilla flavors. This golden amber liquor wafts cinnamon and orange peel straight to the nose. It won Double Gold in the 2018 WSWA Spirits Tasting Competition.
- Cask Strength Rye Whiskey – Extra strong and undiluted when drawn from the cask, this darkly golden whiskey packs a punch of dark chocolate flavor with hints of black pepper, brown sugar, and just a drop of honey. Th cinnamon notes are bold in this one, with strong, lingering clove and vanilla underneath. This whiskey won gold in the 2020 World Spirits Competition.
PREPARATION OR PAIRINGS
You cannot enjoy a classic Manhattan, Old Fashioned, or Sazerac without a rye whiskey. Dilute this spiced liquor with ginger ale or club soda or enjoy it on the rocks for a quiet evening drink.
Looking for a bite to go with your drink? Rich, fatty dishes like broiled salmon or a saucy barbecue are your best dinnertime bets. This is a drink that favors the stronger-tasting cheeses like a traditional Roquefort or the pungent Époisses. If chocolate’s your late-night treat of choice, the taste of rye blends perfectly with milk chocolate—especially if it has a hint of ginger or chili!
THE SPIRIT OF AMERICAN DISTILLATION
Sagamore embodies the heart and soul of the American whiskey experience. Based in the mid-Atlantic region of the country, their operation does not have a single Master Distiller. It’s an intentional choice, giving voice to every idea, innovation, and palate in their quest for different blends of whiskey. They work with rye farms, stave mills, and cooperages in the region to get the best grain and the best American charred oak barrels for their liquor.
Store your bottle upright in a cool, dark place, ideally between 15 and 20°C. Do not refrigerate, as this liquor loses its aroma and flavor with cold. To maintain the moistness of the cork and prevent it from chipping, occasionally tilt your bottle horizontally two to three times, then restore it to the upright position. Unopened bottles can last for an indefinite amount of time, but the closer you get to the bottom third of the bottle, please consume quickly to prevent oxidation and taste alteration.
