TASTING NOTES FROM THE CURATOR
Pale ales sit right between light lagers and dark stouts when it comes to maltiness and taste. American Pale Ale from Mitchell’s Backyard Brewery is refreshing, crisp, and thirst-quenching, loaded with aromatic American hops that give it a beautiful balance between fruitiness and bitterness on a bright, toasted malt background. As a nod to English Pale Ales, from which this type deviated, Mitchell’s brew finishes with lovely wheat notes lingering on the palate.
With its toasty malt flavor, American Pale Ale is a very food-friendly, versatile choice for a backyard barbecue or a light meal. It goes with salads — both those with balsamic and creamy dressings — a large portion of roast chicken, or a hearty, well-spiced bowl of chili. Alongside cheeses, it works best with fruity Cheddars, and can also complement the fresh saltiness of steamed clams or grilled fish. For a slow evening in, it works great with meaty pizzas, and complements Mexican flavors like cumin, cilantro, and jalapeño.
AN IMMIGRANT INNOVATION
The first truly American Pale Ale came from Sierra Nevada Brewing Company and this became the standard by which all pale ale is measured. The contrast between English and American Pale Ales comes down to its brewing ingredients: British malts are nutty and robust while American ones are softer and crisper; English hops are floral, earthy, and refined while American ones have a brash citrus and pine profile. Quite the departure, indeed!
Store beer bottles upright to prevent yeast rings from appearing. They must be kept in a cool, dark place at approximately 13°C. Don’t allow beer to be caught in bright light for long periods of time to prevent it from attaining a “skunky” taste. It is recommended to place your beers in the chiller before serving or drinking. These beers are best enjoyed cold. Consume within 2 weeks.
