Clear, gold caramel colored, and with an ABV of 20%, Frangelico is a hazelnut and herb-flavored liqueur. It’s made with Tonda Gentile hazelnuts from the Piedmont region of Italy, which are shelled, toasted and crushed, then infused, before being distilled and blended.
It has a rich texture, with a very prominent aroma of hazelnut. On the palate, noticeable but delicate hazelnut flavor, with notes of vanilla and dark chocolate, and a smooth and long finish.
Frangelico Hazelnut Liqueur could can be served and enjoyed on its own, in a glass with ice. It can also be combined with soda water, or with coffee. In fact, a “Franny & Joe” is mixing equal parts Frangelico Hazelnut Liqueur and cold brew coffee, then adding a little simple syrup and a dash of bitters.
The Frangelico Hazelnut Liqueur comes in a bottle that looks a Franciscan friar. It’s shaped like a friar in his robes with his hands in front of him; it even has a knotted white cord tied around its waist.
The brand’s name comes from “Fra’ Angelico,” a hermit monk living in the Piedmont hills of northern Italy over 300 years ago. Those monks were allegedly known for their skills in making fine food and drinks, especially in creating wild hazelnut liqueurs.
Store your Frangelico hazelnut liqueur in a cool and dry area, away from sunlight and direct heat, like a pantry or a cupboard. Make sure to keep it tightly closed when not in use.
Unopened, it will remain good quality indefinitely. Once opened, consume within 4 to 5 years, as the flavors will start to fade.
