The potatoes Proper Crisps used are locally grown and only sourced from this location. The farmer in which they procure their potatoes grows the potatoes in Temuka, which is located at the southern part of South Island, New Zealand. These are delicious potatoes which are great for frying. The oil in which the potatoes are cooked is sunflower oil. Sunflower oil was chosen as it imparts a delicious flavor to the potatoes and is far better for the human body as it contains high amounts of unsaturated fat (which is needed by the body), low saturated fat, and no trans fat. The vinegar used in these chips is apple cider vinegar. Aside from its delicious, slightly sweet flavor, this vinegar also shows to be very good for our bodies. The salt used in this delicious snack is Marlborough sea salt - a very famous, sought-after salt due to its freshness and purity.
When one thinks of potato chips, one automatically thinks of a chip, and never a wine. However, potato chips actually pair excellently with wine and can be a refreshing, delightful combination. Take Proper Crisps Cider Vinegar and Sea Salt for instance. While salt and vinegar may be a little hard to imagine with a wine, this will actually pair perfectly with, and seems to be made for, a delicious New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc - Sileni Estates Cellar Selection Sauvignon Blanc, to be exact. This award-winning wine presents delicious notes of tropical fruits. It has a pleasant zing to it and is refreshing on the palate. This will definitely hold its own against the intensity of the cider vinegar and even compliment it with the fruitiness this wine can deliver. A must try!
Proper Crisps prides themselves on the simplicity of ingredients, trying to use only locally available produce. In the case of cider vinegar and sea salt chips, they added acacia gum to the chips. It is used as a natural thickener and emulsifier. It is used to ensure that there isn’t this pool of liquid at the bottom of the bag and that the chips stay fresh. It actually is high in fiber and is said to also be good for the heart when taken in small amounts
The best way to keep chips fresh is to store them in a cool, dry place. If you can remove them from their original packaging and place them in an airtight resealable bag, that is the best option. Otherwise, you can purchase bag clips to help seal the chips in the original packaging. If storing in the same bag, remove excess air and make sure there are no rips or tears on the bag that will allow outside air in. Roll tightly to seal. Clip if necessary to keep air from coming in. The longer the chips remain open and exposed, the more that they are subjected to the surrounding air. It is that air that will cause the chips to become stale and will strip them of that fresh crunch and flavor that you want to maintain.
