Domaine Rolly-Gassman Late Harvest Gew√ľrztraminer de Rorschwihr 2005

Shameless Velvety Sweetness

Domaine Rolly-Gassmann’s wines are known for their unapologetic sweetness. They’re made in driest region of France, right on the German border, facilitating the production of this excellent late harvest vintage.

TASTING NOTES FROM THE CURATOR

Pro¬≠duced in the small town of Rorschwihr since 1611, this wine has a delight¬≠ful pale yel¬≠low col¬≠oration and imme¬≠di¬≠ate¬≠ly notice¬≠able flo¬≠ral and cit¬≠rus scents. Lychee, in par¬≠tic¬≠u¬≠lar, stands out. This wine is of medi¬≠um sweet¬≠ness, with a full body and low acid¬≠i¬≠ty. It is very soft on the palate with a fla¬≠vor blend of orange blos¬≠som, peach, and cit¬≠rus peel. Its fin¬≠ish is long, with a bit of an oily texture.

PAIRINGS

Gew√ľrz¬≠tramin¬≠er is an aro¬≠mat¬≠ic wine that pairs per¬≠fect¬≠ly with Indi¬≠an and Mid¬≠dle East¬≠ern dish¬≠es. This is a wine that invites you to step away from West¬≠ern Euro¬≠pean tra¬≠di¬≠tion¬≠al cuisine.

Nuts and dried fruits served along¬≠side roast¬≠ed meats are a fair descrip¬≠tor for many promis¬≠ing dish¬≠es to eat with this wine. High¬≠ly spiced herbs and aro¬≠mat¬≠ic herbs like cayenne, gin¬≠ger, turmer¬≠ic, Sichuan pep¬≠pers, bay leaf, and corian¬≠der are some exam¬≠ples of sea¬≠son¬≠ings that will be brought to full promise. As for cheeses, this wine favors the less stinky cheeses, pre¬≠fer¬≠ring del¬≠i¬≠cate¬≠ly fla¬≠vored soft-rind cow‚Äôs milk varieties.

RESISTANCE AGAINST CLASSIFICATION

Vil¬≠lages like Rorschwihr in the Alsace region pro¬≠duce wines that are not part of the AOC Grand Cru sys¬≠tem. To winer¬≠ies like Rol¬≠ly-Gassmann, being part of that sys¬≠tem would mean giv¬≠ing up their indi¬≠vid¬≠ual char¬≠ac¬≠ter and the thou¬≠sand years of her¬≠itage that have gone into the devel¬≠op¬≠ment of their wines, only to be lumped into a sin¬≠gle region¬≠al appel¬≠la¬≠tion. Twen¬≠ty-one spe¬≠cif¬≠ic wine¬≠mak¬≠ing sites exist in the Alsace region, all pur¬≠vey¬≠ors of excep¬≠tion¬≠al wine‚ÄČ‚ÄĒ‚ÄČno labels of clas¬≠si¬≠fi¬≠ca¬≠tion required.

Storage Instructions

Store your unopened bot¬≠tle in a cool, dry, and dark place safe from con¬≠stant vibra¬≠tion. Keep your bot¬≠tle hor¬≠i¬≠zon¬≠tal in a wine rack or cel¬≠lar to retain the moist¬≠ness of the cork. The ide¬≠al tem¬≠per¬≠a¬≠ture for stor¬≠age is between 7 to 15¬įC. Once opened, a bot¬≠tle will be good for 3 to 5 days stand¬≠ing upright in the refrigerator.
