Maltaise Oranges are small fruits with a thin skin. They have a nice orange skin, and a deeper-colored flesh. They have a soft, exquisite flavor—mild, but juicy and sweet. Called the Queen of Oranges, they are sweeter and less acidic than most oranges.
You can enjoy Maltaise Oranges on their own, or cut them into pieces and use them in salads or cocktails. You can use them to make some great juice, smoothies, or cakes and ice creams.
There was a time when trade in the Mediterranean was restricted, and this was reason for the Maltaise Orange gaining a popularity of excellence, as it was a luxury to have. So wild was the anticipation for the arrival of these oranges amongst the European aristocracy that tradesmen would compete for them to be individually paper-wrapped and packed into boxes for the sophisticated European market. In fact, the sisters of the king of France invested in an orange garden in Malta in 1780, just to ensure their own annual supply.
Oranges require well-ventilated storage and cool temperatures away from direct sunlight. You can place them on the counter or table in a wire or wooden basket. Don’t use a sealed container, as this can hasten the spoiling process. At room temperature, they will last up to 3 days. If you decide to store your fruit in the fridge, place them in the crisper, with or without a mesh bag. They’ll keep for up to two weeks.
