Notes from the Curator

The Bow Tie Duck’s Limited Edition Reusuable Canvas Tote bags come in two designs.

One features the Mandarin Duck, a very rare perching duck species native to the East Palearctic ( spans Europe, Asia north of the Himalayan mountains, Northern Africa, North America and Greenland). They are admired for their majestic stance and their unique purple, orange, green, blue and white combination of feathers. Considered in the Chinese culture as some of the most beautiful birds in the world.

The other design features the Spectacled Eider Duck, a large sea duck that resides along the coasts of Alaska and northeastern Siberia. They are noted for their white back, yellow-green head with the large circular white eye patches. They are known to like the winter Christmas season, given their love for flying in cold weather and diving in icy waters.

Special Art

The art in our Limited Edition Reusuable Canvas Tote bags are created by rising self-taught artist, Nikka Reyes-Aligaen. The running theme for her work had always been nature, but she now focuses on painting birds, particularly ones that are found in the Philippines. She is influenced by her surroundings in Antipolo (her residence) where there are enough trees that are home to elusive birds that sing unique and captivating songs during different times of the day.

To date, she has had one small solo exhibit in Crescent Moon Cafe, two small group shows with a group of women artists from Antipolo; and has participated in the past two Sampayan Art Exhibits and the 2020 year-end shows at Pinto Art Museum. She has also contributed to two mural paintings: the “Sunflower Wall” in 2017 near Pinto Art Museum and the “Flores Para Los Muertos” mural at the Manila North Cemetery in 2019.
