The Plantation Original Dark Rum is a blend of Barbados one- to three-year-old rum, and Jamaica Pot Still High Ester 1- to 15 years old. They’re blended in a wooden vat, and aged for three to six months in France. This double-aging technique gives it a great dimension of flavor, and a wonderful structure.
This rum has an ABV of 40% and has a smoky quality to it. on the nose, it gives cloves, cinnamon, black peppercorn, and molasses, with notes of leaves, black tea, dry stone and forest to finish. And on the palate, a fruity, off-dry entry with notes of white raisins and dried pineapples. As it continues, it gets more minerally, with drier notes, and a spicy finish.
This rum is great to drink neat, or with a splash of ice and a slice of lime. But it’s also a great companion to cocktails. A classic option, should you want to try your hand at bartending, is a Dark and Stormy. It’s really simple to make, but will definitely impress.
All you need is to fill a tall glass with ice, and add in lime juice and your Plantation Original Dark Rum. Pour in some ginger beer, and garnish with a wedge of lime. So easy, but so tasty.
It was in 1989 that Alexandre Gabriel discovered Maison Ferrand. One of the oldest spirit brands found in the Cognac region, it had a glowing reputation but sadly, was not doing too well. Alexandre saw an opportunity, and bought the brand.
But who is Alexandre Gabriel? He is an entrepreneur with a tireless passion for incredible rum and cognac. His curiosity is what drives his never-ending search for the best rums. In 1990, he combed the Caribbean to taste and experience the incredible rums of the region—not just for their flavors, but for the processes. He dedicated 15 years of his life to perfecting his rum-making, and it was all worth it.
In 2012, Alexandre was given the award Master Rum Blender of the Year at the Golden Rum Barrel Awards. The American Distilling Institute also named him Distiller of the Year.
Presently, he has become a name in the spirit industry, garnering praise from all over. His passion as president and owner of Maison Ferrand has birthed—and continues to grow, three major spirits under the brand: Ferrand Cognac, Citadelle Gin, and Plantation Rum.
