Tasting Notes of the Curator

The Planteray Panama Vintage 2010 carries the lush signature of its origin. Born of molasses distilled in column stills, it spent 8 years resting in bourbon casks under Panama’s tropical heat before travelling across the Atlantic for a further 5 years in Ferrand French oak. This double ageing weaves an extraordinary balance of fruit, spice, and oak refinement. On the nose, bright notes of fresh coconut, plum, nectarine, and citrus mingle with almond, cinnamon, honey, and sesame. The palate is rich and layered: juicy pear, berries, figs, and orange are deepened by butterscotch, coffee, pepper, and custard. Its finish is long and complex, echoing with coconut, banana, chocolate, licorice, and tobacco, accented by warm spice. At 51.4% ABV, this limited-edition release commands presence yet maintains elegance—a rum for those who treasure both intensity and finesse.

The Don José Distillery holds a unique place in Panamanian rum heritage, founded on the site of the nation’s first sugar mill and surrounded by fertile rainforest. In 2010, Alexandre Gabriel selected 22 barrels from this storied distillery, entrusting them to time and climate. Panama’s humidity and heat imparted tropical lushness, while years of refinement in France drew out elegance and spice. The result is a rare spirit—both bold and graceful—capturing the dialogue between continents and traditions. Under the banner of Planteray, this rum continues the legacy of Plantation while embracing a modern, global vision.
