An incredibly popular traditional Italian digestif, the Amaretto Disaronno is a sweet and aromatic drink that works well both on its own or as an ingredient in cocktails.

TASTING NOTES FROM THE CURATOR

This amber-colored liqueur has an ABV of 28%, and has a distinct almond character (although it uses no actual almonds). It has a classic packaging, with its bottle designed by a master craftsman from Murano. The Amaretto Disaronno has been made in Saronno since 1600.

It has aromas of fresh cherries, vanilla, and sweet almonds. Its flavor is also heavily almond, with subtle cherry notes rounding out its smooth finish.

PREPARATIONS AND PAIRINGS

Amaretto Disaronno can be drunk straight or on the rocks. It’s also great to include in cocktails, like The Godfather (recipe from Liquor.com):

  • Fill a tall glass with ice, about 2/3 of the way.
  • Add in scotch and amaretto. Stir until combined and chilled.
  • Strain into a glass over fresh ice.
  • Enjoy!

A GIFT OF GRATITUDE

Disaronno traces its history to the Renaissance, an iconic period of creativity in Italian history. Legend has it that in 1525, a pupil of Leonardo da Vinci, Bernardino Luini, was commissioned to paint a fresco in Saronno. It was to be of the Madonna del Miracoli, and the fresco is still found there today.

But to be able to paint the Madonna, Luini needed a muse. And he chose a beautiful innkeeper for this purpose. To thank Luini, the woman gifted him a flask of amber liquid, which was made with almond kernels steeped in brandy. Thus, the first amaretto liqueur was born.

Storage Instructions

Store your liqueur in a cool and dry area, away from sunlight and direct heat, like a pantry or a cupboard. Make sure to keep it tightly closed when not in use.

Unopened, it will remain good quality indefinitely. Once opened, you may refrigerate for better keeping. Consume within 4 to 5 years, as the flavors will start to fade.
